A Political Romance
by Laurence Sterne
The first work written by Stern can be called the novel à clef or scandalous crown, which was very popular in the early eighteenth century. But even these more appropriate names do not justify the richness and slipperiness of this text. Certainly the legal church can be regarded as a cynical epic allegory that envelops the provincial strife between archbishop and dean, namely the "Lilliputian" satire on church politics in Stern York, with its translucent curtains.
