A Simple Soul
by Gustave Flaubert
The story of a girl named Felicity. She is a servant who has lived with the same family since she was betrayed by her lover. There is a strong sense of loyalty and altruism: he lives to help others. Flaubert gives us a complete character, showing a quiet, uneducated sanctity who lives a rather difficult life. The text is an ordinary realistic explanation with simple objects, such as a map showing his lack of education and a (effective) parrot, the priest acknowledges its importance in his last gesture to the maid. This is a "must read" book.
