A Study In Scarlet

by Arthur Conan Doyle

It is Doyle's first published story, which includes the legendary Sherlock Holmes, arguably the world's most famous detective, and the first short story by Boswell Holmes, the humble Dr. Watson, a military surgeon who recently returned from the Afghan War. Watson needs a tenant and sabotage. Holmes needs foil. And so begins great literary collaboration. Watson and Holmes move to the famous address 221B Baker Street, where Watson meets Holmes' quirks as well as his incredible ability to show information about his friends. Somewhat concerned about Holmes' selfishness, Watson nevertheless becomes blind by his seemingly magical ability to provide detailed information about a man once seen under a street car across the street. Then murder. Confronting a desolate house, a twisted corpse without wounds, a mysterious expression drawn in blood on the wall, and Scotland confronts Yard-Lestrade and Gregson-Holmes, he takes a pinch and a pinch of it, often confusing his faithful Watson. Holmes later explains, "When solving this kind of problem, the biggest thing is being able to reason back... If you tell them the result, there are very few people who can develop from their own inner consciousness what steps lead to that outcome. "Holmes is part of this elite group. Conan Doyle quickly learned that it was Holmes' inferences that interested his readers the most. The long comeback, although a tradition of popular fiction, has taken away from the readers' actual concentration. When Holmes and Watson gather in front of a coal fire, and Holmes sums up the conclusions that led to him successfully catching the culprit, that's what we get the most out of.
