Clement C. Moore wrote The Visit of St. Nicholas, better known as "The Night Before Christmas," as a gift to his children. If an enthusiastic guest in the house had not sent a poem to the editor of a local newspaper, a cheerful old elf traveling on a deer sleigh could only revive the traditions of a family.
