A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers
by Henry David Thoreau
Based on a trip he made with his brother in 1839, Concord and Merrimack Rivers Week is an excellent example of Thoreau's naturalistic writing talent. Toro depicts the nature that surrounds him during the journey in exquisite detail. One of only two books published during his lifetime, Thoreau began work on the novel after the death of his brother in 1842, but the work was not fully completed and published until 1849. The failure of the first publication has since been considered one of Thoreau's greatest naturalistic works.
