Arms and the Man
by George Bernard Shaw
Guns and Man was George Bernard Shaw's first commercially successful play. This is a comedy about true love versus idealized love. A young Serbian woman idealizes her war hero fiancé and sees a Swiss soldier who begs him to hide him as a terrible coward. After the war, he changes his mind, but all the problems with the Swiss correctness of his former soldier need to be resolved before he can decide on the last one. The premiere of the play took place at an enthusiastic reception. Eventually, only one man booed Shaw, and Shaw replied, "Dear friend, I completely agree with you, but what are the two of us against so many people?"
