Bally Barry's Redmond Barry is a clever young man who learns the behavior of a gentleman. He serves him well, curling up in Europe for the next few decades as a soldier, mercenary, gambler and so on. By marrying an English heir, he reaches the pinnacle of worldly success, but wastes his wealth and goodwill. In 1975, Stanley Kubrick released a film based on this novel.
