The third novel in the Charlie Chan series, set almost entirely in California, follows the former president of Scotland Yard, a detective who tracks down a murderer long and cold. Fifteen years ago, a London lawyer was murdered under conditions where the only clue was a pair of Chinese slippers he was wearing just before his death. Since then, Frederick Bruce has tracked down the killer. She was also involved in a number of women who were endangered around the world, who had a connection with the disappearance of a woman named Eva Duran in rural India fifteen years earlier. Just when it looks like he can finally solve the murder case, at a dinner party to which a number of important and mysterious guests are invited, Inspector Bruce is murdered and last seen in a pair of Chinese slippers that have disappeared. Chan needs to solve the case and tie up all the free ends.
