Between the Acts
by Virginia Woolf
The author's last novel, written in the first years of the Second World War, was completed just before his death. The action takes place on a summer day at the Poinz Hall cottage in the heart of England. In the garden, the villagers present their annual competition - on this occasion scenes from British history to "ourselves", which became spectators in June 1939. During breaks, Puenz Hall, Olivera residents, guests and villagers drink tea, walk and talk. There is a tense interaction between the unfortunate Jesus Oliver, his handsome husband Giles, whom he loves and hates, and Mrs. Manresa, the guest who follows him. The Storm interrupt the final scoreboard and the competition ends. The artists and audience go to rebuild their normal lives, and Jesus and Giles confront each other.
