Brideshead Revisited
by Evelyn Waugh
Charles Ryder, a lone Oxford student, is fascinated by the ugly and collapsing Sebastian Fleet. Invited to Sebastian's gorgeous family home, Bridshead, Charles attracts the attention of his eccentric, artistic walkers, admiring them and the lives of the privileges they live – especially with Sebastian's distant sister, Julia. But when duty and desire, faith and happiness come into conflict, and marshals try to find their place in a changing world, Charles finally begins to realize his spiritual and social distance from them.
