The novel is set in 1893 on the territory of the Yukon. The main character, nicknamed "Burning Daylight", was the most successful entrepreneur of the Alaskan gold rush. The story of an adventurer who travels to Alaska and lays the foundations of his fortune even before the arrival of the gold hunters. Bringing his fortune to the United States, he is deceived from him by a group of money tycoons and restores them only in the barrel of his gun. Then he begins to work as a ruthless exploiter at his own expense. Eventually, he gets a drink and becomes a picture of corruption. During this time, he falls in love with his stenographer and wins his heart, but not his hand, and then - and reads the story!
