Children of the Soil
by Henryk Sienkiewicz
For most readers, a double interest of this book will be one connected to the picture of Polish life and a general human interest that cannot be separated from characters similar to those represented in Mr. Stanisław's short story. Poles are part of a large Slavic breed, which has already played a very important role in world history and will play a much more important role in the future. The controversy surrounding Mr. Stanislav's career and meditations is of interest to all in a civilized society; it is an argument so clearly presented and supported by such pointed examples that there is no need for either interpretation or explanation.
