Cousin Phillis
by Elizabeth Gaskell
Cousin Phyllis, a haunted, beautifully controlled short story, is considered one of Elizabeth Gaskell's best short works. Paul Manning, who lives with a pastor on the outskirts of London, is initially confused to find that his uncle, whom he must visit in the country, is also a church figure. Far from the oppressive religious family she envisions, however, Manning enjoys meeting her ancestral relationship — especially with her cousin Phyllis. But when Phyllis falls in love with the charm of her more sophisticated colleague, Manning's family ties weaken her to prevent the inevitable heartbreak that arises.
