Crotchet Castle
by Thomas Love Peacock
As in his previous novel, Streamhead Hall, Peacock gathers a group of eccentrics, each with a single monomanic obsession, and derives humor and social satire from their different interactions and conversations. The closest character to the author's own voice is Rev. Dr. Foliott, an energetic middle-aged clergyman who has a love for ancient Greek language and literature, is extremely suspicious of the reformist slogan "March of Reason" and everything that a "knowledgeable friend" does. There are two romantic courtships between Mr. Kolchuh and Suzanne Tachandgo, and between Captain Fitzchrome and Lady Clarinda Bossnowl. The action begins during a house party at Mr. Crotchet's villa on the Thames, continues as he makes his way across the river and canal into Wales, and ends in Mr. Cheynmail's so-called medieval apartment, as a parody of Captain Swing's rebellions.
