Descent into Hell
by Charles Williams
The origin points to various forms of selfishness and how the cycle of sin leads to the need for atoning action. In it, the scientist becomes so far removed from the world that he fetishizes a woman to the extent that his heresy takes the form of a succubus. Characters include a doppelganger and the ghost of a Victorian builder who committed suicide. This illustrates Williams' belief in replacing sin and substitute love.
