Down and Out in Paris and London
by George Orwell
This unusual fictional narrative – partly autobiographical – recounts the adventures of a penniless English writer between two great cities with no pity for himself and often humor. The Paris episode fascinates the narrator with a dishwasher at the bottom of the kitchen stage or exposure to the kitchens of chic French restaurants, where he works longer. In London, while waiting for work, he feels the world of tramps, street people and free homes to live in. In the tales of both cities, we learn some sobering Orwellian truths about poverty and society.
