Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon
by Jules Verne
This novel tells the story of Joam Garral, a rancher who lives near the Peruvian-Brazilian border on the Amazon River, who is forced to travel downhill as his past takes over him. Much of the novel is set on a large jangadi (Brazilian jungle raft) used by Garral and his family to swim to Belem at the mouth of the river. Many aspects of the raft, sights and travel are described in detail.
