Greenmantle
by John Buchan
Greenmantle is a story about the intrigues and adventures that took place during the First World War. It depicts Richard Hannay, the protagonist of the author's previous novel, Thirty-Nine Steps. As he travels across Europe to thwart the German conspiracy and find the Islamic Messiah, he is joined by three other buchan heroes: Peter Pienaar, a Boer scout; John Blenkyron, an American determined to fight the Kaiser; and Sandy Arbutnot (Greenmanttle), modeled after Lawrence of Arabia. Fearless friends disguise themselves as far as Constantinople and the Russian border through Germany to confront their enemies - the grotesque Stum and the evil beauty Hilda von Einem. [Major Hannay's account of the case was published under the title Thirty-Nine Steps.]
