He Knew He Was Right
by Anthony Trollope
Louis Traveller seems to be the happiest of the gentlemen of the Middle Victorian era: young, rich, good-natured, handsome and with a beautiful wife. But his life is destroyed by irrational jealousy. In later crazy scenes, in which the unfortunate hero is completely obsessed with the imaginary infidelity of his wife, Trollope's work performs a Shakespearean movement like nowhere in his vast fictional output. In a subplot dedicated to the marriages of British and American heroes, Trollope engages in the issue of women's rights. In the person of Mrs. Jamima Stanbury, the virtuous dragon of Exeter Cathedral Close, Trollope has created one of the most important comic book characters.
