Heart of the World
by H. Rider Haggard
An extraordinarily beautiful Indian princess and a white Englishman fall in love, but she suffers deeply because of her feelings. Set mainly in Central America in the 1870s, the film is one of Haggard's more interesting romantic adventure novels, in which the main characters travel to a crowded ancient city hidden in the mountains (possibly in Guatemala). "... A cryptometaphysical study that is far removed from haggard's usual simple adventure stories... Rich in detail, ingenious and well-drawn, but at times weak in characterization. The moral message is conveyed in a powerful way, like a sense of tragedy. Sometimes there are small supernatural elements, but the main prophecy turns out to be wrong. "
