Hedda Gabler
by Henrik Ibsen
Although it premiered the following year with negative reviews, the play has since been considered a classic work of realism, and Hedd's character has been seen by some critics as one of the major dramatic roles; a hamlet woman. Gabler is actually the character's maiden name, not her first name through marriage (this is Hedda Tesman); As Ibsen wrote, "My intention in giving her this name was to show that Gedda as a man should be regarded as the daughter of her father rather than the wife of her husband."
