Returning to the home of the family home in Russia after years of fruitless attempts away from his roots, Lavretsky decides to turn his back on the emptiness halls of Paris and his frivolous and unfaithful wife, Varvara Pavlovna. Upon his return, he meets Lisa, the daughter of one of his cousins, whom he knew as a child and who rekindled feelings of love that had been drowned in him for a long time.
