Huntingtower
by John Buchan
Dixon McCune, a respectable, recently retired grocer of romantic heart, is planning a modest hiking holiday in the hills of south-west Scotland. He meets a young English poet and, contrary to his best understanding, finds himself in the thick of the conspiracy about the kidnapping of a Russian princess held captive in the unstoppable Huntingtower mansion. This modern story is also a gripping adventure story, and within Buchan introduces some of his most beloved characters, including Gorbals, who reappear in later novels. He also paints an extraordinary picture of his younger, much younger comrades joining them in a difficult and often dangerous struggle with tyranny and fear.
