I Will Repay
by Emma Orczy
The year is 1783 and the rich Paul Deruled insulted the young Vicomte de Marnie and responded with contempt to his last hobby, Adele de Montercery. Derulet had no intention of getting into a fight, but he had a tendency towards errors in events – "undoubtedly part of the legacy bequeathed to him by his bourgeois roots". Disturbed by his anger at Adele, whom he sees as an example of virtue, Vicomt invites Deruled to a duel, a fight that Deruled does not want – because he knows and respects the boy's father, Duke de Marnie.
