In the Ranks of the C.I.V.
by Erskine Childers
Erskine Childers, the famous author of the classic sailing and espionage novel The Mystery of the Sands, served alongside London's best imperial volunteers on artillery weapons associated with the Honorary Artillery Company. Childers, along with enthusiastic colleagues from the city's professions, tried to fight the Boers of South Africa and wrote a fascinating and detailed account of the time he spent in the procession during the war. Written in an easy and informal style – the kind that has allowed his better-known writings to last more than a century – it guides the reader through learning to experience it on the battlefield.
