Indiscretions of Archie
by P. G. Wodehouse
This wasn't Archie's fault. It is true that he went to America and fell in love with Lucille, the daughter of a millionaire hotel owner, and if he married her, what else was he going to do? From his point of view, it was all about a good egg; but his father-in-law, Mr. Brewster, thought otherwise, that Archie had neither money nor a profession, which was unpleasant in the eyes of the industrious Mr. Brewster; but the real bar was that he had once criticized one of his hotels negatively. Archie does his best to heal the disorder; but, like a donkey, as a priceless thing, he believes that it is almost impossible to appease the "monster fish" that Divine Providence gave him as his father-in-law.
