Lady Susan
by Jane Austen
A victim of a vicious scandal, the impoverished Lady Susan must reconcile with her son-in-law and family. Refusing to accept the role of a calm guest in the house, he plots to confuse the owners, seducing his bride's brother with the help of his impeccable nobility and some well-engaged flirtation. Still, before his victory is complete, he must first argue with the early appearance of his ex. Inspired by Les Liaisons Dangereuses and written in a similar epistolar form, Lady Susan is one of Jane Austen's oldest finished works (written around 1794). In it, he reveals all the caustic wit and brilliant social satire of his later short stories.
