Last Men in London

by Olaf Stapledon

The Last Men in London follows an Englishman named Paul from childhood to adulthood who served in an ambulance brigade in World War I (reflecting Stapledon's personal story). Olaf Stapledon's previous science fiction novel, The Last and First Men, predicted a date of two billion years, beginning in the 1930s. In this accompanying work, a super-intelligent narrator from a distant future explores 20th-century life, entering Paul's mind to observe his childhood, his ministry during World War I, and his life after that.
