Last Post
by Ford Madox Ford
The Last Post, the fourth and final volume of The End of Parade, takes place on a post-war summer day. Valentin Vannop and Christopher Thietgens share a country house in Sussex with Thietgens' brother-in-law and brother-in-law. From different perspectives, Ford explores the tensions between his characters in a changing world plagued by the experience of war, facing a dangerous future for him and Britain. The ancestral home of Thietgens was left to the Americans, its large tree was cut down; People like Thietgens, who served in the war, believe they have no place in a demoralized civil society. The celebration of Armistice Day has been replaced by peacetime uncertainty.
