Letters on England

Voltaire's response to his exile in England, also known as lettres anglaises ou philosophiques, offered the French people a panoramic view of English culture in 1734. However, perceiving them as a covert attack against the old regime, the French government ordered the letters to be burned and Voltaire to be persecuted.
