Macbeth
by William Shakespeare
One of the great Shakespearean tragedies, "Macbeth" is a dark and bloody drama of ambition, murder, guilt and revenge. Encouraged by the prophecies of three mysterious witches and provoked by his ambitious wife, Scotsman Tane Macbeth kills King Duncan of Scotland to inherit the throne. This obscene act soon confuses the noble, whose conscience is in a difficult situation, with a web of betrayal, deception and even greater murders, which eventually leads to his demise. Set against the backdrop of gloomy castles and the lonely heathers of medieval Scotland, Macbeth paints an impressive dramatic portrait of a man of honor and honesty destroyed by a fatal flaw in character and the torture of the criminal imagination.
