Makers
by Cory Doctorow
Perry and Leicester are inventing things: seashell robots that make toast, Boogie Woogie Elmo dolls that drive cars. They are also inventing completely new economic systems. When Kodak and Durakell are torn apart by sharp venture capitalists, Perry and Leicester help invent The New Job, a New Deal for the Age of Technology. Barefoot bankers travel the country micro-investing in high-tech utility mini-ventures. Together they are transforming the nation, and blogger Andrea Flicks is there to document it. Then it goes into collapse. The bust of "New Business" embarrasses the bomb spot. Perry and Leicester are building an interactive driving network at abandoned Walmarts on the grounds. As his trips gain popularity, a rogue Disney executive develops a wild attack on the rides that convinces the police that their 3D printer was used to make the AK-47. Lawsuits are rising as venture capitalists adopt a new investment strategy: supporting lawsuits against companies like Disney. Lester and Perry's friendship is shattered by Lester's treatment for fat men, which turns him into a jibarite gigolo. Then everything becomes really interesting.
