Man And Superman
by George Bernard Shaw
After her father's death, Anne Whitefield becomes the joint ward of the two men: the venerable Roebuck Ramsden and John Tanner, author of the Revolutionary Handbook. Believing that marriage will prevent him from achieving his higher intellectual and political ambitions, Tanner is horrified to discover that Anne wants to marry him and flees to Spain with a determined young woman in a fiery quest. The chase even takes them to the underworld, where alter ego characters discuss issues of human nature and philosophy in a lively debate in a scene, often performed separately as "Don Giovanni in Hell." In Man and Superman, Shaw combined seriousness with comedy to create a satirical and violent exposure of the eternal struggle between the sexes.
