Moll Flanders
by Daniel Defoe
Mall Flanders tells the story of his extraordinary life, from his birth in Newgate prison to the advanced years of marital welfare. After being seduced in his adoptive family's home, he lives at the expense of his mind and beauty, like one, "five times a wife" and a thief, and is eventually transported to Virginia for his crimes. Rich and regretful, Moll reflects on a world of both good and evil, just as the reader both hates and admires. Probably the first British novel, Moll Flanders is also a novel, its protagonist in an endless quest for a lost family paradise.
