My Bondage and My Freedom
by Frederick Douglass
My Captivity and Freedom is an autobiographical slave narrative written by Frederick Douglass and published in 1855. It is the second of three autobiographies written by Douglas and is basically an extension of the first (A Story of the Life of Frederick Douglas), which discusses in more detail his transition from bondage to freedom. A former slave, Douglas became a leading abolitionist, orator, writer, and publisher upon his release. As his narrative evolves, Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist, journalist, orator, and one of the most powerful voices to emerge from the American civil rights movement, turns from a slave to a fugitive reformer, leaving behind a legacy of social, intellectual, and political thought.
