Nicholas Nickleby
by Charles Dickens
Nicholas Nickleby became known as a comic victory, and in Dickens he firmly established himself as a "literary gentleman." It has a full supporting cast of gorgeous characters, ranging from the curious Wocford Squires and his family to the eccentric Crumples and the traveling cast of the magnificent Mrs. Nickleby, who takes on Mantalinis, Kenwigs and more. Combining these with typical Dickensian burlesque and comedic elements, the novel is perfectly suited for dramatic adaptation. When Dickens left his pen, his influence was so great that many pirated versions appeared in print even before the original was finished. Often neglected by critics, Nicholas Nickleby did not cease to please readers and was considered one of the greatest comic literary masterpieces of the nineteenth century.
