Northanger Abbey
by Jane Austen
Northanger Abbey tells the story of Katherine Morland, a young girl who leaves her preserved country house in the late 1790s to enter the busy and sophisticated world of Bath. Austin watches the interaction between Katherine and the various characters she meets there with insight and humor, and watches her growing understanding of the world. His first feature novel, Austin, also captures his poignant, ironic view of other modern genres of romanticism, especially the Gothic school exalted by Anne Radcliffe. Catherine's reading is intertwined with her social and romantic adventures and adds to the uncertainties and shames she must experience before finding happiness.
