On the Beach
by Nevil Shute
After the nuclear World War destroyed most of the world, the few survivors in southern Australia await a radioactive cloud that follows their path and brings certain death to all who are on their way. Among them is the American submarine captain, who struggles to resist the knowledge that his wife and children in the United States must die. A weak Morse code signal transmitted from somewhere near Seattle is then received, and the Captain's Towers must take the submarine crew on a bleak tour of the devastated world in search of a desperate search for signs of life. A surprisingly convincing portrait of how ordinary people can face the most incredible nightmare on the beach.
