Over the River
by John Galsworthy
The institution of marriage, which gives a man all the rights over a woman, is a subject that Galsworthy visits once again. Claire Charwell had fled from her sadistic husband to England. Along the way, she meets charming Tony Claum, but when she refuses to return to her husband, she falsely accuses her of adultery in a very public trial, and yet has no choice but to admit that the woman is guilty of marital infidelity. It's the divorce scum that any self-respecting woman should hide, but Claire prefers to openly rebel against her husband, get a job and get a job in life. This is a new woman; bright, lively and active.
