Planet of the Damned

by Harry Harrison

Brion Brandd, a superhuman champion of the twenties, is a competition consisting of 20 tasks, both physical and mental. He also works for the Foundation for Cultural Affairs, a special body that exists to "promote peace and ensure the sovereign prosperity of independent planets." His mission in this story is two downright wars between two planets orbiting the same Sun: one is a highly developed culture, and the other is barbaric on the planet Dies. Disans has only one desire: to kill. Brandd needs to find out why. Dis was a harsh, hospitable, dangerous place, and Magter made the situation worse. They may have once been human – but now they were something else. Marter had only one desire – to kill himself, his planet, the universe, if they could. Brion Brandd was dispatched at eleven. His mission was to save Dees, but apparently he was going to head his destruction. Brion Brandd also appears in the sequel, Planet of No Return.
