Pollyanna
by Eleanor H. Porter
The whole city is playing this game and the whole city is surprisingly happier - all because of a little girl who teaches people the new game and how to play it. Suddenly orphaned, Pollyanna travels across the country to a small town in Vermont, where she will live with her strict aunt Polly. But Pollyanna doesn't seem to realize how strict and insensitive her aunt really is. Feeling unhappy, he just plays the game of "cheerful" - in each cloud he finds a silver lining. Eventually, Pollyanna lights up the lives of everyone in town with her infectious game and finds a home for every stray cat, dog, and child she encounters. But then a terrible accident happens and Pollyanna can no longer find anything to be happy about. It turns out that all her new friends support her, but is that enough to reclaim Pollyanna's funny outlook on life?
