Requiem For A Wren
by Nevil Shute
After being wounded in battletime, fighter pilot Alan Duncan reluctantly returns to his parents' remote sheep station in Australia to replace his brother Bill, who died as a hero in battle. But his return home was marred by the suicide of the accomplice of his beloved parents. Alan soon realizes that a dead young woman is not the person he is imitating. After learning that he served in the Royal Navy and was involved with his brother in a secret summary of the Normandy invasion, Alan begins to piece together tragic events and the lonely burden of guilt that plagues a woman's life. In the process of finding an answer to the mystery, he realizes how much he has in common with this woman he has never met, and how the war can continue, killing people long after it's all over.
