Ruth Fielding In the Red Cross

by Alice B. Emerson

Now that the Great War has begun, Ruth and Helen are taking permission from second-year students at Ardmore College to devote their time to the Red Cross and the war effort. Ruth is soon transferred to the state headquarters, where she becomes alarmed when she discovers that a woman named Mrs. Mantle, who is very critical of the Red Cross, now works in an important position for the Red Cross. A mysterious fire destroys all donation records at the government headquarters, and Ruth wonders if the fire was set on fire to hide evidence of lost money. Soon after, Ruth travels to France and helps console the wounded soldiers. Ruth's unrest resurfaces when Mrs. Mantle arrives in France with her two Confederations. As Ruth watches Mrs. Mantle closely, she wonders if she should tell anyone about her suspicions.
