Sense and Sensibility

The story revolves around two sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Elinor is equidistant and self-directed. Marianne is passionate and impulsive. When their father dies, his first son from a previous marriage owns the family home against his parents' dying desires. Elinor, Marianne and her mother go to the country, and each sister meets a man she is interested in. As with Austin's other novels, demanded love doesn't come easy, and many revelations and a trip to London are required before permission can be found. When meaning and sensuality first appeared, the words of his name had tremendous cultural weight: Austin dealt with and satirized concepts of sentimentality that were already a subject of debate, although its meaning was similar to the current use of "sensitivity." Mindfulness was considered the inclusion of reason and emotions, a virtue that many believe, that would lead people to correct and benevolent behaviors and mark them as intellectually and morally superior.
