Cobb Anderson created "boppers," intelligent robots that overthrow human lords. But now Cobb is an aging alcoholic just waiting to die, and the big boppers are threatening to suck all the little boppers — and ultimately every human — into a giant, fused consciousness. Some of the smaller boppers aren't very keen on the idea, and there's a full-scale robot rebellion going on on the Moon (where the boppers live). Meanwhile, bopper Ralph Numbers wants to give Cobb immortality by letting the big bopper cut his brain and seal it with 'software'. That seems like a good idea for Cobb.
