Song of the Lark

by Willa Cather

Set in Munstone, a fictional town in Colorado in the 1890s, "Lark's Song" is a self-portrait of the artist in production. The story revolves around Thea Kronborg, an ambitious young hero who leaves her hometown and travels to the big city to fulfill her dream of becoming a well-trained pianist, the best piano teacher. When the piano instructor hears her voice, she realizes that it is her true artistic gift. It encourages her to continue learning vocals instead of piano, she says... "Your voice is worth anything you can put into it. I didn't rush to this decision." The novel captures Thea's independence, strong work ethic, and rise to her highest success. At every step along the way, his awareness of the banality of his peers pushes him to a greater level of success, but during his rise, he has to reject relationships that no longer serve him.
