Starfish
by Peter Watts
A major international company has developed a plant along the Juan de Fuca range at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean to harness geothermal energy. They send a team of bioengineers — people modified to withstand pressure and breathe seawater — to live and work in this strange, fertile underwater darkness. Unfortunately, the only people eligible for long-term employment in these experimental power plants are crazy, some in unpleasant ways. How many of them will survive or be allowed to survive as a global catastrophe approaches from below? starfish is the first part of Peter Watts' Riffers trilogy.
