Suspense
by Joseph Conrad
Conrad's unfinished novel, which he worked on before his death in 1924, in which he returned to one of his favorite subjects: The French Revolution. Unlike Duel, his character here is a young Englishman named Cosmo Latham, who visited Genoa during the days when Napoleon was imprisoned at the Elbe, where a conspiratorial environment of diplomats and spies of all colors revolves around the spectral figure of the exiled emperor. Among the many people Cosmo meets, he meets Madame de Montevesso, a liberal aristocrat who has the misfortune of marrying an unscrupulous soldier. Conrad shows the skill of his craft, the accuracy and richness of his writings - he considers this novel one of his greatest achievements - Thriller is a work that would have been a masterpiece had it not been for his sudden death.
