The scenes of this story are set in Egypt – Abu Tabah is an incomprehensible Egyptian who mysteriously appears and disappears, not as bloody a villain as Fu Manchur, but has the same soulless interest whose abuses characterize the activities of the yellow doctor. In the second half of the book, especially in the story "Valley of the Wizards", there is a new element in Romer's work: the supernatural.
