The American Crisis
by Thomas Paine
The American Crisis was a series of pamphlets published by the revolutionary writer Thomas Paine in London between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolution. He condemned the actions of the British and the Loyalists and supported the cause of Patriotism. The first of these four pamphlets was published on December 23, 1776; the second on January 13, 1777; third, April 19, 1777; and the fourth and last one on September 12, 1777. The first of the pamphlets was published at a time when the Revolution still seemed like a shaky possibility. The opening sentence was considered the watchdog word of the movement towards Trenton. Famous opening lines: These are times that test the human spirit: In this crisis, an old soldier and a sun patriot will hesitate to serve their country; but the one standing now deserves the love and gratitude of a man and a woman.
